More Cons, a New Eddie Woodhouse Story, and Pinterest

May 9,2013

Madicon and RavenCon were fabulous. Now it’s time to line up my con appearances for the rest of the year:

Balticon in Hunt Valley, Maryland, May 24-27 (That’s barely two weeks away. Eep!)

Dragon*Con, Atlanta, Georgia, August 30 – September 2

Capclave (my hometown con) in Gaithersburg, Maryland, October 11-13

“Glass Transit”, Eddie Woodhouse’s latest misadventure, will debut in Hellfire Lounge 4: Reflections of Evil this August. More stories are in the queue, but in the absence of release dates, there’s not much to say.

Yeah, this gets into a recent discussion at Smexy Books regarding whether writers should reveal their plans for characters, series, etc. I understand May’s desire to know when her favorite characters will return, but speaking as a writer who had her writing partner die in the middle of a sequel, talking about books and stories that aren’t under contract is bad juju.

But there’s always a way to compromise if you look hard enough. With that in mind, I’ve opened a Pinterest page where I create boards for works in process. The first one covers a short fantasy story set in the Sultan’s Bath at the Topkapi Palace. I don’t want to hex it by saying more, but you’re welcome to enjoy the pictures.
Meanwhile, happy spring!

Conventions in 2013 and beyond

November 25, 2012

As you can see from the sidebar, my 2013 convention schedule is filling up. Three are confirmed:

Madicon in Harrisonburg, Virginia, March 8-10

RavenCon in Richmond, Virginia, April 5-7

Capclave (my hometown con) in Gaithersburg, Maryland, October

I also plan to attend Balticon and DragonCon, but their guest lists have not yet been finalized.

Ditto, World Fantasy Con 2014. Yes, you read that right. I’m already talking about 2014, because World Fantasy Con 2014 will be held barely fifteen minutes from my front door. Science fiction, fantasy and horror’s top writers, editors, publishers, artists and the best fans ever will be coming to Crystal City, Virginia, to celebrate the best in speculative fiction and art. To say nothing of the centennial of Virgil Finlay’s birth. I am so going to be there!

For the laughs: Two funny Broad Pods for your listening pleasure

July 19, 2011

Broad Pod Image

Like everybody else, I’m stricken by the news that Borders, which for years served as my happy place for books, will be no more. I can’t offer enough sympathy and good wishes to its employees–or rain enough curses on the heads of its inept and wrong-headed management.

My mom used to say laughter cures all ills. As far as I know, it doesn’t do beans for a job hunt. But in the hopes that it might make the evenings afterward more bearable, I offer you two BroadPods. I really should’ve mentioned Lord Bai and I were in the April episode, which also features Jody Lynn Nye’s reading from her new comic space opera and K.A. Laity’s meditation on Mad Hatter economics, as well as novel excerpts from from Shauna Roberts and Lynda Williams.

But the real news in this post is the unveiling of the July BroadPod, just in time for bookstore relief. Jody hosts this one, which features Jaleta Clegg’s new take on “Mary Had a Little Lamb”, Tracy S. Morris’s Bubba vacation tale and Justine Graykin’s job security-seeking spies. And, oh yeah, a little passage of mine about sirens and strudel. You know the one. Mwahahahaha!

Summer and fall con schedule

July 17, 2011

Dragon*Con is a month and a half away. How did the year go by so fast? I don’t know my schedule yet, but chances are you’ll find me on the Dark Fantasy, and Science Fiction and Fantasy Literature Tracks, if not a couple more. This year, the world’s greatest summer camp for wayward adults will run from September 2-5 in Atlanta. Hope to see you there.

Another six weeks after that, October 14-16, I’ll be at DC’s own science fiction and fantasy convention, Capclave. Capclave is a literary con with the motto “Where reading is not extinct” (hence the dodo mascot). It focuses on science fiction, fantasy and horror short stories. This year’s writing and editing guests of honor are Carrie Vaughn and Catherynne Valente, and if that’s not enough, there’s sure to be an “Eye of Argon” reading in there somewhere. Nobody’s yet made it through without laughing. Ditto on the hope. A good time will be had by all.

“Fixed” is available for pre-order

July 17, 2011

And so are all the other stories in The Modern Fae’s Guide to Surviving Humanity, a splendiferous DAW anthology edited by the multi-talented Joshua Palmatier and Patricia Bray. Stories by people like Seanan McGuire, Anton Strout, Jim C. Hines and Elizabeth Bear. And me! “Fixed”, the (ahem) tale of a teen-aged cat shifter who doesn’t want that to happen to him, is in there, too. The full table of contents can be found here. You want to own it. And you can! All you have to do is follow this link, and the book will be delivered to you as soon as it’s released in March 2012.

Can’t wait? Neither can I. But pre-ordering will make you feel better. Well, it’ll make Joshua, Patricia, Seanan and all those wonderful writers–and me!–feel better. So much better, we might be able to do it again, and that way everybody wins.

SynDCon Jester

The spiffy logo at the left belongs to SynDCon II, the Washington DC area’s premiere gaming convention, set for the Rockville Hilton (former home of Capclave), April 1-3. Which is where I come in, along with several of the usual suspects–friends! I mean friends! Danielle Ackley-McPhail, Vonnie Winslow Crist, Kelly A. Harmon, Diane Whiteside and I will be the con’s writing guests. No word on program specifics yet, but I’ll post more details as they become available.

January 16, 2011

I’ve been tapped to moderate a fabulous seminar on paranormal, futuristic and fantasy romance hosted by Washington Romance Writers at the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Regional Service Center, Bethesda, Maryland, March 5. The seminar features best-selling authors Catherine Asaro, Colleen Gleason, Mindy Klasky, Pamela Palmer, Diana Peterfreund and Rebecca York, who will share their insights into the art, craft and business of writing speculative romance. The seminar starts at 10 a.m. In addition, after lunch special guest Colleen Gleason will teach two one-hour workshops: “The Hero’s Journey” and “Worldbuilding”. The seminar is free, and you don’t have to be a WRW member to attend. Hope to see you there!

Just in time for your holiday buying. And to help you get into the spirit of the holidays, there will be music by Catherine and Donald Wolcott. How can you you go wrong?

New Short Story Contract

August 21, 2010

Drollerie Butterfly

“Personal Demons”, a tale about demonic possession and tantric sorcery in Alexandria, Virginia, has been accepted and contracted for Hellebore and Rue: Tales of Queer Women and Magic edited by JoSelle Vanderhooft and Catherine Lundoff. (Insert demented happy dances here. :D) I’ve loved this story for ages, but people told me it would never sell because my protagonist happened to be a lesbian. Just goes to show the story (and its magically gifted heroine) knew better than anybody. They were waiting for the right home, and what a lovely home it will be. Drollerie Press has a rep for fantastic covers and amazing content. I can’t wait to read the other stories in the anthology. Fortunately, the wait won’t be too long. The editors and Drollerie Press hope to issue the ebook in time for Halloween. This year! Color me thrilled.

Yes, that’s right, I’ve been added to the guest list for Intervention, the Washington DC-area webcomics con held at the Rockville Hilton, September 10-12. Meanwhile, for your reading pleasure, I’ve added two new short story links to the And Stuff page:

Catching Up

April 22, 2010

Dragon's Lure cover (small)

Of all the pages to forget to update! Fortunately, there’s always more news.

My next conference will be Balticon, May 28-31, at Marriott’s Hunt Valley Inn, Baltimore, Maryland.  My tentative schedule includes three panels (one with Guest of Honor Tanya Huff!) and a Broad Universe Rapid Fire Reading.  Even better, this year’s Balticon will mark the launch of Dragon’s Lure, an anthology of dragon stories featuring David Coe, C.E. Murphy, Keith R.A. DeCandido, John Grant and yours truly.  My contribution is “Lord Bai’s Discovery”, which some of you may have heard at RFRs over the past year.

It’s official, I’m on the guest list for DragonCon 2010, the world’s greatest summer camp for wayward adults.  Come join the fun September 3-6 in Atlanta, GA.  There will be writing, art, music, film and TV stars, and me!  (Yes, it is all about me–at least in this corner of the web site.  ;-))

October 22-24 will find me at Capclave, our local SF/fantasy convention, in Rockville, MD.  The emphasis at Capclave is is on short form science fiction, fantasy and horror.  The mood is relaxed and intimate–a big change from DragonCon, though I usually have a blast at both of them.

Hope to see you at all three!
